Join us At Grindstone Lakes

Deep in the heart of Central Oregon’s high desert lies one of the greatest stillwater fly fishing destinations in the American West. The Grindstone Lakes consist of five incredibly scenic lakes ranging in size from 20-80 acres.  These lakes are spring fed, shallow, and play host to a myriad of aquatic insects.  These factors combine to create a dream scenario for the stillwater fly angler.  All five lakes host large populations of trophy-sized rainbow trout.  Although every season is slightly different, anglers can consistently expect to tangle with fish in the 2-10 pound range, with 2-4 pound fish being the most readily available.  These are lake-raised fish that have had to fend for themselves from very early on in their lives. As a result, these fish are beautiful, well conditioned, and pull very hard on the end of a 5 weight.  Grindstone Lakes are all fly fishing only and catch and release with barbless hooks to ensure the best possible guest experience.

The saving grace of this amazing fishery is its exclusive private access.  Direct Adventures is the sole outfitter at Grindstone Lakes.  Despite its stellar reputation, the remoteness and private ownership of Grindstone ensures that these lakes are lightly fished throughout the year.  After we greet you at the gate, your group will most likely never see another soul asides from our staff, the occasional cowboy, and the abundant wildlife.

Our season at Grindstone begins in mid to late April and continues through July.  Bookings tend to be the heaviest in May and June, which coincides with some of the best hatches of the season.  Anglers in the fall often cast at fish that haven’t seen an artificial fly in months.  At almost 5,000 feet in elevation, the lakes fish well all season.
